Arugam bay surf resort
Far below the Eastern City of Batticaloa is the beautiful Arugam Bay a virtually unspoiled beach extant. In fact the Surf resort took off with a humble beginning in 1970 as a small guesthouse and later it thrived with several cabanas as was the vogue during that time. When surfing was taking the prime interest of activities the business did survive during the gruesome civil war only to be devastated by the Tsunami in 2004. It is back to life with ardent surfers frequenting, when the tide is just what is ideal. Rightly put it is the most preferred beach for surfing in Sri Lanka.
It is also popular for snorkeling and with it a delightful experience would be to plunge into the Basses Reef.
This apart, the Resort is a pivot to many other tourism related activities especially for the eco and wildlife fans. Within its reach are the Gal Oya, Kumana and Lahugala parks. Ruins of the bygone era, historic shrines and Buddhist Temples and monasteries of priests too could be of interest to many. The parks and sanctuaries are inviting as many migratory bird species about 200, visit year after year during specific seasons to escape snowy mountain cold like that of the Himalayas. Besides, herds of Elephant which roam in the wild also are a treat to watch. The other wildlife species are leopards, foxes, deer, sloth bears and wild boars.
The Resort has Standard Family rooms, Cabanas, Double rooms, Double A/C rooms and a Beach family Bungalow to care for.
